Practice statement
Thato is an Intellectual Property specialist, based in Pretoria, focusing on transnational trademark and copyright protection. He obtained his LLB degree from the University of South Africa as well as a Master&; degree in intellectual property law and a National Diploma in law from the University of Johannesburg. Thato has worked as an intellectual property researcher dealing with copyright licensing with the South African Dramatic, Artistic and literary Rights Organisations (DALRO) and as a Candidate Attorney with the biggest boutique intellectual property law firm in South Africa. He has also completed his first level of examinations under the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL). In his prior practice, Thato focused on trademark and copyright litigation, including trademark oppositions, trademark and copyright infringement, domain names and DMCA take-downs, company name objections, trademark searches, and prosecution. Thato has also been appointed by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), an agency of the United Nations, as a consultant dealing with matters related to copyright infrastructure and collective rights management. Outside of legal practice, Thato serves as a part-time lecturer of undergraduate law students sharing his insights and experience in intellectual property law, constitutional law, and legal history.
