The significance of the "1845" is that this was the year that New York adopted a full time professional police force. In the center of the design, within the inner circle is an eight pointed police badge. This eight pointed police badge, within the inner circle, is a depiction of the first police badge adopted by the New York City Police Department. This badge is described as follows; A circular design with eight triangular points. Within the circle is representation of a Dutch settler on the left side, in the middle is an oval containing the following images. Within the oval is a depiction of the arms of a windmill. Between the two top and bottom arms is a depiction of a beaver. On the right and left of the arms are a depiction of barrels. Atop these images sits an eagle. To the right of the oval is a depiction of a Native American. Written across the bottom of the logon inside the circle below the oval is the word "POLICE".
